The Ripple Effect: Small Steps Lead to Big Results

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle

Procrastination is the single habit at the root of so many problems that plague all of us at one time or another – challenges with managing our time, relationships, projects, and information.

Procrastination is doing low-priority tasks and activities instead of the high-priority ones which so often contribute the most to our success. For some, procrastination becomes a harmful habit which impedes personal and professional development.

If procrastination is so harmful, why do we do it? We tend to put off doing things for the following reasons:

**They are unpleasant to do.
**They are difficult or complex to do.
**They involve making tough decisions that can be overwhelming.

When we don’t want to do something that is unpleasant or difficult, we find less important things to do that will keep us “busy” so we have an excuse for why we didn’t get around to it. But putting something off does not make it go away, and postponing it often just makes it worse. As someone once said, “Killing time murders opportunities.”

I’ll share a key to success that I’ve learned from my own life experiences…

If you want to make big changes in your life, start by making small ones.

What small change have you made recently that yielded positive results for you? By thinking about what is working, you are focusing on the positive. Remember that we attract whatever we choose to give our attention to — whether wanted or unwanted. When we focus on what we want, we are more likely to attract it into our lives.

Unlike a long list of unrealistic New Year’s resolutions that usually get broken before the end of January, small changes can create a ripple effect of another small change, followed by another. In other words, small changes can lead to other related changes. Next thing you know, you’ve generated an unstoppable tidal wave!

Ask yourself this question: What’s one thing that, if you did consistently, would make the greatest positive difference in your life?

I asked a client (I’ll call her Kate) this question a couple of years ago during a coaching call. Her initial response was that she wanted to start taking the train to work instead of driving her car in horrible rush-hour traffic. But Kate said she could not do that because she often needed the car to get to meetings during her workday. I asked her if there were other means of transportation available to her (subway, taxi, etc.) on days she had appointments that were not walking distance from her office.

Kate was not sure how it would work, but she was willing to commit to a one-month trial period. I spoke with her at the end of her first week. She recognized how this one change was already having a tremendous positive impact on her life. Over time, the impact grew larger. The ripple effect was doing its thing!

Here are some of the benefits Kate has experienced:

* Kate is able to sleep 30 minutes later each workday, since she actually gets to work quicker by taking the train.

* Kate has saved enough money in gas and parking fees to pay for her coaching sessions with me.

* Kate has time for her professional reading, which she does in the mornings on her way to work.

* Kate has time for pleasure reading on the way home. (She had not read a novel in years!)

* Because she has to catch the train home at a specific time, Kate leaves the office at a set time instead of staying for “just a few more minutes” (which was never just a few minutes!) to get caught up.

* Kate is conducting more business using technology (teleconference calls and webinars), which saves her a lot of time that she used to spend getting to and from meetings. Others appreciate this time savings, too!

* By leaving the driving to someone else, Kate’s stress level is much lower when she gets home.

* Kate’s reduced stress levels gives her added energy, and she now works out at a nearby health club a few times a week. (Before, she barely had the energy to crawl in the door of her home. Once she got there, she rarely ventured out at night.)

* Kate met a wonderful man at her train stop near her home, and they started dating last year. (They’re still dating, and the future looks promising!)

I could keep listing the effects this one change has had on Kate’s life. It’s a perfect example of the ripple effect in action — all of this by making one change, which led to another, and another.

Enjoy The Simple Things

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Always having been a budget conscious person (well, some have
called me a tight-wad), I know all about the simple pleasures.
Sure it would be great to take long cruises, go to any event I
wanted, buy anything I wanted — WAKE UP! Unless you are a
multi millionaire you can’t do all that It definitely doesn’t
fit in my budget. Instead of being negative because you are
“deprived”, think of what you can do. Take a walk on a bright,
sunny day. Notice the flowers. Notice the trees. Don’t just
notice the other walkers. SMILE and say “hi” to them. Enjoy the
benefits of exercise. You will feel better. It will help you get
in better shape. Get out there and move. And, guess what, it
doesn’t cost anything. It is absolutely FREE. Here is another
very rewarding thing to do. Volunteer at a child’s school. Offer
to tutor a neighborhood child. There is nothing like the
pleasure that comes from teaching a child. Other places to help
out kids are: Boys and Girls Club, any programs for troubled
youth, any youth recreational leagues. If you have a special
talent (art, singing, writing) ask at the local middle and high
school if there is any way you can help. Help the kids. Doesn’t
cost you anything, but how rewarding it is! At the other end of
the age range are senior citizens. Many can certainly benefit
from more attention. Many assisted living facilities will allow
volunteers to come in. You don’t need any special
abilities….except the ability to listen. Having someone to
talk to can be the highlight of their day. I hope this short
article will make you stop and think. Don’t be negative because
you cannot have all the things you want. Enjoy life! Share with
Others. Help Others. You will be rewarded.

Why You Sometimes Act Wrong

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Everybody did it. Acted impulsively and then regretted it later. While we can be grateful that such events were not all that frequent, life was all about making such choices. From the time we woke up, till we dropped off to sleep, we repeatedly chose to act on a single option out of thousands. Each choice led to an action. Even for the simplest action, when you reached out to shut off the morning alarm, there was massive complexity underneath. That action involved muscle movements, which were sequences of contractions. Muscles responded to nerve signals instant by instant. Each signal invoked only a tiny contraction. Yet, your hand moved with clear purpose. It did not wander off on its own. That purpose was continually sustained. Those muscles had to contract precisely over thousands of contraction cycles till you fingers achieved the purpose of touching the button.

Even a computer carried out sequences of actions to meet a purpose, expressed by a Command. For the “Copy” command, the computer read bytes of data, retained them in memory and wrote them to a new location. Its purpose remained constant, while numerous actions were performed. Life followed the same theme. The activities in our lives also had hierarchies of purpose, with numerous individual actions performed to meet each objective. Switching off the alarm was a small bit of the purpose of going to office. Running to catch the train, or waiting at the lift served the same purpose. Which was but a small part of the purpose of keeping a job, which again remained a subset of the objective of survival itself.

Science discovered that a region of the brain, the basal ganglia, played a role that turned purposeful action into quick, reliable and unthinking habit. Your actions were largely automated. All you had to do was to express a purpose and the basal ganglia would move your muscles to achieve it. But how did you express a purpose? It began in the cradle. As a baby, you made erratic hand and leg movements. Then you saw a toy. Your waving hand touched it. That movement was recorded. A subsequent view of the toy recalled this feeling, which triggered the remembered muscle movements. Over the years, through repeated play and experimentation, your basal ganglia learned to move your hand towards seen objects. Across the years, it learned to weave you through traffic, meeting the purpose of getting you home. That left you free to worry about mortgage payments. Until you had a new feeling. Gas in the tank was low. You needed to fill gas. That purpose turned you off the highway.

Most of the time, your mind acted to convert feelings into reality. Feelings were our interpretation of events in the world. Fear and anxiety, or joy and satisfaction interpreted the world around us. Since most emotions were triggered in just a few milliseconds, trains of feelings passed through our minds. Fortunately for us, a region called the limbic system, a primeval brain, generated and managed this flowing stream of emotions. It chose the most powerful emotion and set that as your purpose, inhibiting lesser emotions. So, if you acted suddenly in ways which you regretted later, it was because you were suddenly the victim of an overpowering emotion. It was not your choice. But the choice of the limbic system.

Thus, mature actions depended on stilling your emotions to prevent over riding control by the primitive limbic system. Across the ages, sages suggested many ways to still the mind and bring peace. When we did that, a superior intelligence, which we term consciousness, took over and guided us with all its vast inherited and acquired wisdom. That was the secret of being “cool.”

Persistence Brings Success – Your Dreams May Be Much Closer Than You Think

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Persistence often means success, even in the face of what can look like failure. You never know how close you are to victory, and your dreams may be much closer than you think.

In his classic book, “Think And Grow Rich”, best-selling author Napoleon Hill tells the story of a man who put everything he had into the search for oil, but every shaft he sank stayed dry. Eventually, after many unsuccessful tries and with his funding and his patience both exhausted, he gave up, and to cut his losses sold the land and the equipment to a rival.

The second would-be millionaire had done his homework well. He’d surveyed the land with care, as well as learning from the other man’s mistakes, and at his very first attempt he struck black gold. His oil well made a fortune — just three feet beyond the first man’s final try.

Recently I watched a TV program about the sister of the British Queen. Apparently Princess Margaret as a girl had been in love with a former fighter pilot and war hero, Group Captain Peter Townsend. The couple planned to marry — but there was a problem. Peter Townsend was divorced, and at that time it was considered unacceptable for the Queen’s sister to marry a divorced man.

The Prime Minister and the politicians insisted that this could not happen. The Princess was given a stark choice. She could give up her place in the Royal Family, her income of £6,000 a year (about $11,000 — a lot of money at the time), the palace the she lived in, her servants, her title and the whole nine yards — or she could give up Peter Townsend.

Eventually, she was persuaded that it was her duty to renounce the man she loved. (She later married someone else — and, ironically, her own marriage ended in divorce.)

Although the Princess believed that she was faced with opposition it would be impossible to overcome, that wasn’t actually the case. Government papers from the time which have only now been made public show that, unknown to the Princess, the politicians had given up the fight.

Faced with the overwhelming support of the public for the marriage, the Government had secretly agreed that if, as they expected, the Princess insisted on marrying the man she loved, they would allow her to keep her status in the Royal Family, and actually raise her income to £15,000 a year ($29,000 — a massive sum of money at the time!).

The Princess had no idea how close she came to victory. If she’d just stood firm, she would have had it all. The Government had even set the date for making the announcement – but they never had to make it. Just three days before the news was to be made public, the Princess called off her engagement.

One story from the 19th Century, and one from the 20th — but their message is as timeless as it’s universal.

If you have a dream, hold on to it. The only certain way to fail is to give in. You’re never beaten till you say you are — and if you NEVER say you are, you’re never beaten.

You never know how close you are to victory, and your dreams might be much closer than you think.

Success might be three days away — or just three feet.

Success Training Secrets- START! Just Start- Where You are.

by Doug Firebaugh

“Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are…..” Theodore Roosevelt

Start.

Just start.

Nike says it…”Just Do It!(tm)”

In WildFire Success, we say “Just Start!”

Doesn’t matter if you do not have all the education, training, tools or Success manuals.

Doesn’t matter if timing isn’t perfect.

Doesn’t matter if you are not in the perfect place to do what your heart burns for, and has dream for, whether massive success, or massive lifestyle.

Start. Now.

The least known people in the world who got started years ago, now are millionaires/billionaires.

Steve Jobs.

He started Apple Computer — totally underfunded, understaffed, misunderstood.

But he got underway.

He Started.

Bill Gates.

He started. Well, you know, that Seattle company. He started in a dorm room, with no money, and only one gear:

OverDrive. And his drive is what got him over the tough spots.

He Started.

Michael Jordan. He started. And was stopped several times, but he kept starting over, and over. And well, you know. He did pretty good.

Boy did He Start!

And the list is endless.

All great Successes have one thing in common:

A Starting point. An Ignition. A Spark. A first step.

What are you not starting? And why aren’t you?

Fear? Doubt? Lack of Self Esteem? Lack of Knowledge? Bad Parents? Bad Childhood? Bad hair Day?

No Money? No Time? No Credit? No help? No education? No Way?

All the “Pat” excuses that everyone accepts as a “reasonable” factor not to do anything?

***Who sold us on that gem?***

“Come on! Let’s be REASONABLE and not live in a fantasy world! Success is for others! Not in our family!”

There is no “Reasonable” with Creating Massive Success. Successful people are some of the most unreasonable people on earth. They refuse to listen to other’s reason for mediocrity.

Only the “Unreasonable” create new destinies for their life, and for thousands of others, and change becomes their mantra.

WILDFIRE SUCCESS Secret:

Reasonable is staying put. Unreasonable is Starting Power.

There are No excuses for not starting.

You wanna know what Start stands for?

“Success That Always Reveals(a)Trail.”

That’s why you need to Start.

The trail will not walk itself.

What’s the VERY FIRST THING you need to do to create your Success Dream and Passion in your Life?

Write it down.

Break it down into the 3-4 tasks required to complete it.

See it on the Movie Screen in your Mind as Successful.

Review it and Rehearse it on your “Screen”, over and over.

Get 2 pieces of paper.

On one, write all the reasons you cannot do this and succeed.

On the the other piece, write all the reasons you MUST do this and succeed.

NOW– Tear one of them up.

And if you chose the reasons you MUST Succeed:

Start. Just Start.

There’s where the Success Magnet is:

Being Totally, Radically, Absolutely Unreasonable in your Achievement and Success pursuit.

A Dollar and Some Ambition

Friday, October 24th, 2008

(Excerpted from “Building Your Network Marketing Business” CD)

Capital in your business isn’t what matters. It isn’t the money that buys you a future; it’s your skills that buy you a future. Money and no skills, I’m telling you, you are still poor. Money and no ambition, where are you? Money and no courage, you’re broke. A little bit of money and a whole lot of courage is all we need.

When looking for people, don’t always look for the ones with money, money doesn’t matter. What matters is somebody’s willingness, somebody’s ingenuity, somebody’s willingness to try. If they have a dollar to invest that’s plenty for me. A dollar and some ambition and I can show you how to get rich and it will be one of the classic stories of the company. When recruiting somebody and they would say, “I don’t have any money”, I’d say “I’ve been looking for you for six months! Let me show you how to do it without any money.”

Because here are the rules of capitalism: you can either buy and sell or, if you are in certain circumstances, you can sell and buy. That is, if you’ve got ambition. Now if you haven’t got ambition we can’t cure that and money can’t cure it – lack of ambition. But if you have a dollar and some ambition I will show you how to get rich. Even if you don’t have a dollar I will show you how to get rich, because you can sell and buy. Somebody says, “As soon as the product arrives I’ll sell it.” No, no, you don’t understand. You don’t understand the magic of fortune if you say I have to wait till the product gets here. And you probably don’t understand the value of your own story.

By selling and buying you are simply sharing from your own excitement and belief about the product and the opportunity. Once the customer says yes, ask for the money and then go get the product. After doing this three or four times, you will be able to buy and sell, but never let money keep you from an opportunity when you have in it’s place true ambition, faith and courage.

Get Some Lifestyle Coaching to Gain Great Results

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Success coaching is a therapy that has become incredibly familiar over the last nine years. The term coaching first became preferred in the United States where, together with Neuro Linguistic Programming, it became part of an improved mind-blowing wave of really proactive therapy models. Change your life today with Life Coaching.

In many ways both Performance Coaching and NLP are a reaction against certain variants of the Humanistic movement, in particular Human-Centred Counselling. A criticism of the humanistic and person centred therapy approach is that it is astonishingly reactive and not extraordinarily proactive. Although all that works wonderful with some clients, with other clients long periods of impasse or low return for time and effort occur. Coaching and NLP are both humanistic therapy in stance, spending time on improving a clients happiness rather than looking into the minefields of childhood, as in traditional therapy. Life coachings emphasis is, however, deliberately proactive and used to make you happy.

Performance coaching is not about preaching to the customer what to do. This is a common misconception. Some coaches are quite successful in their business careers and then make the cross over to life coaching, thinking that they will at most be required to divulge their pearls of incredible success and wisdom with the life coaching client. Sharing pearls of wisdom is more like mentoring an apprentice in a specific environment. Lifestyle coaching is instead about life as a whole.

Emotional Throw-up, Life As A Sandwich And More:Tips On Putting Smiles In Your Days

Never Have Another Bad Day!

Your reaction/thoughts to the above:

• An audible “gasp”
• Impossible you think
• Tragic things happen over which I have no control
• Bad days make me human
• NOBODY has 365 good days a year
• It would take a miracle for ME to never have another bad day

And what if a miracle did happen and you never had another bad day in your whole
entire life? Now just how great would that feel? Just imagine how thrilling your life
could be each and every moment if you weren’t spending so much time “dealing”
with your bad days.

There’s no magic genie that is going to pop out of a lantern to grant your wish of
NO MORE BAD DAYS; the real magic lies in your own attitudes and behaviors. Your
response to the world is what creates your world, which means YOU can change
your world! Yes………..you really are that powerful. Sorry, no more cop outs for not
having great days every day. No more blaming somebody or something for how you
feel. The gig is up, the die has been cast, the frost is on the pumpkin, the party’s
over and it’s time for you to take charge of YOU!

Is TAKING CHARGE OF YOU an easy task? And the answer is:

• Yes
• No
• Maybe

Which one did you choose? RIGHT ANSWER! If you’ve decided it will be an easy task
… then it will. It’s also true that if you decided it will be a difficult task that is
also true for you. And if you answered maybe, then I’m quite sure you’ll be drawn to
the YES response with little effort. Whatever belief you hold in your heart and soul is
what will manifest in your life. So, if you believe, or at least dearly want to believe,
that you can actually have NO MORE BAD DAYS let’s GO!

EMOTIONAL THROW-UP

Okay, so you’re serious about pursuing a life filled with absolutely, awesome,
wonderful days. Before we can get into the nitty-gritty of what the heck is
happening to your days to make them horrid there are a couple of foundational
pieces upon which the other pieces rest. The first one is………oh no it’s really true
…………FEELINGS!!! If you don’t have a clue how you feel about anything you are not
going to be able to figure out what to do about anything. You may just know that
you have an “emotional throw-up” episode every now and then without having the
foggiest idea what really prompted the mess you made all over everybody around
you.

There’s this ridiculous belief alive and well in our society that in order to have a
great day any day we should never feel sadness or pain or any of the so called
negative emotions. That is really a whole bunch of baloney. Many of you are
probably spending a good share of your energy keeping down those “bad”
emotions. Yeah…they suck! Who in their right mind would want to feel THOSE? But
you know what? There are a ton of people out there who manage to show up every
day pretty darn happy. So they must have something going for themselves, as it’s
just not possible that they are immune to the garbage that life throws at everyone
else. But so many spend so much time, energy, and money trying to avoid what
ultimately can lead to tragic consequences. Addiction, over-eating, alcoholism,
over-shopping, etc. all arise from the misguided attempt to keep those blessed bad
feelings at bay. It just doesn’t work!

LIFE IS A SANDWICH

Life is very much like a sandwich; it’s full of all kinds of different layers. Imagine
that you started out with your own “life sandwich” neatly layered to assist you
throughout your life. The deal is that all of the sandwich must be eaten in your
lifetime; (sorry, there’s no choice here). Some of the layers in the sandwich are
absolutely delicious and some of them are about as vile as you can get. So what do
most do? Well of course, they eat as many delicious layers as possible and do
whatever it takes to never get into the yuck stuff. But remember the deal. You WILL
have to eat those yuck layers sooner or later and wouldn’t it be much better to eat
them as you go?

Nobody gets out of this lifetime without taking in those yuck layers of the sandwich,
without feelings of sadness, despair, loneliness and pain. They are part of life itself
and enable us to more deeply feel the joys, thrills and outright glee, which is also
part of our humanity. All of your feelings are valid and good in spite of the fact that
you may have learned somewhere in your history to stuff them, deal with them, get
rid of them. They are part of your true nature, all of them.

PUT ON THE BRAKES

So how to open up and get moving? Meditation, yoga, tai chi, journal writing and
many other activities that quiet the mind and body are great and may work for you.
But if that doesn’t seem to fit your style here are a few suggestions:

• Put on some tunes and dance in the house
• Talk to the cat or take the dog for a romp
• Watch the birds at your feeder
• Get into the garden and don’t wear gloves
• Lose yourself in a delicious creative activity
• Mountain bike on a super muddy trail
• Watch a DVD that you think is hilarious

What’s the silliest thing you could do that would make you smile?

How do you think you’d feel if you engaged in something outside of your norm that
you just loved to do?

What do you REALLY, REALLY want to do but are afraid of what others might say?

What made you happy as a youngster?

There as many ways of putting on your personal brakes as there are people in the
world. You know best what will work for you so now your only challenge is
CHOOSING to put a smile on your face, to feel what’s inside wanting to come out
… and let it!

IRONY: 3 a (1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result.

I have always envied those who state they don’t care what people think. Most of my life I have been denying, much to everyone’s chagrin, that I do not care what people think of me. When life left me with nothing to worry about but myself, I realized the irony of caring about opinions of me caused people to think what I did not want them to think of me.

I’ve learned, most, naturally express what they need and act against it. I have proudly professed, “Even stupid people ain’t stupid.” But I thought I could fool them with my words and behaviors. In trying to be what I thought everyone wanted. I was not me. Now, I know even stupid people can see if I am true to myself. I believe everyone has a purpose and we all carry knowledge of universal truths. There must be bad to know good. There must be ugly, stupid, mean, jealous, people to know beauty, intelligence and those worthy of your love. I care about opinions and I no longer feel weak for admitting me.

Without denial, what I send out to others comes back to me.
If you want to be appreciated, then you must think about what others think of you. They are your teachers- what you think of them teaches you about your fears, hopes, and what you covet. When you are sure of your convictions do not waver; you are being you. When you find something about yourself that you do not like, ask why. Are you denying who you really are and what will make you happy? Are your repetitions of behavior and reactions perpetuating what makes you unhappy?

Everyone can change. Everyone can have what they want. Everyone can be loved. You may have to give up all that you know about your life, but whenever you stop, you are reborn.
