Rewards Credit Cards – Are They Really a Sweet Deal?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Rewards are everywhere! Gas stations… grocery stores… pharmacies… hotel chains… They all claim to reward you on purchases that you make. Likewise, credit card companies have their own rewards credit cards programs. Simply put, the more you spend, the more rewards you get from a rewards credit card. Sounds like a sweet deal, doesn’t it?

The Fun Factor of Rewards Programs

Unless you’re a savvy rewards credit card shopper that’s done his or her homework, then you might end up feeling like a kid again or worse yet, a fool. Remember dropping quarter after quarter into the machine trying to get that cute little stuffed animal only to end up with a little plastic finger ring and empty pockets. If lucky, you might have gotten that irresistible toy after all, but it probably cost you way more than it was really worth. With games, I guess the idea is “fun,” and if you get rewarded that’s even better. But with rewards credit cards, is the “fun factor” worth your hard earned money? Read more to find out how to keep the fun in the rewards.

Avoid High APRs

Cards with rewards often have higher interest rates than the typical card. For those who like to pay off their balances each month, rewards credit cards might be right up your alley. If you don’t pay off your balances, then you might find that the higher rates are not worth the rewards. You will need to do a little math to figure out the best deal.

Avoid Annual Fees

Like high APRs, a reward credit card may require you to pay annual fees as much as $40. Once you’ve paid the annual fee, the rewards might not be enough to justify getting the card in the first place. Consider the value of the reward versus the amount spent in annual fees and interest rates.

Cash In On Cash Back

Some rewards credit cards offer cash back rewards for your purchases. For example, you might earn 1% on all purchases. If you spend $5000, then you’ll get $50 back. This type of rewards credit card bases the cash back earned on the amount of purchases you make, and there might be a maximum limit you can claim. When evaluating these offers, be sure to read the fine print.

Accumulate and Redeem Points

Most point systems are designed to give you about one point per penny spent. Say you earn 1000 points using your reward credit card. You might get a reward worth about $10, such as a store gift certificate or credit that can be accumulated and applied to a larger gift reward. If a rewards credit card offers less, has a cap on the number of points you can earn or the points can expire before you use them, then you might find a better deal elsewhere. Take time to shop around!

Fly the Skies

Frequent flier programs are similar to the point system and cash back rewards. You might get one flier mile (or point) for every $2 that you spend using your card. Most cards require you to generate around 25,000 point before you can redeem them for free airline fare. Any cards that require you to accumulate more points might not be worth it. If you are a frequent flier and can benefit from this type of program, compare reward credit cards. The best place to do this is online.

There are numerous reward programs that are available when using rewards credit cards. Individual cards may have specialized programs that are tailored to various groups, such as small business owners, students, travelers, “shopaholics”, etc. Just like the carnival games, a girl will run straight for the games with doll prizes, whereas a boy will want to play for balls or cars. The same holds true for credit cards shoppers. But beware of the gag gifts! Take your time to read the fine print and shop around for the best rewards credit cards.

Debit Cards vs ATM cards: Is Convenience Really Worth It In The End?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

As a society we have made changes due to increases in technology. Less Americans are carrying cash today, all because of the now highly used debit cards that are issued with nearly every bank account we open. Prior to this, we had ATM cards which were great in the sense that we were able to always take money out of our bank accounts or deposit money into our accounts from multiple locations at any hour of the day. Now with the increased reliance on Debit Cards, we may be forgetting about the risks we take in using it over our traditional ATM cards.

Think of it this way. When you use an ATM card, you have to know the pin number. When you use a Debit Card you merely swipe, sign and go. This convenience is not only good for us but also anyone that get a hold of our debit cards! If we had ATM cards, there ability to hack into our account would be greatly reduced merely because of that pin number.

Banks offering Debit Cards through the Visa or MasterCard name are also upholding the “zero liability” rule on them. Basically stating that as long as your report your card stolen within 2 days, you will not be held liable for money lost do to fraudulent usage. But you also have to go through a lengthy process and it can be up to 20 days until the banks refund the money into your bank account that was lost. This is something to keep in mind when choosing between an ATM card and a Debit card.

Debit Cards are an obvious good choice for those individuals with damaged credit who are unable to get typical credit cards. The Debit Card will allow them the same buying conveniences as a credit card. For those who already have credit cards, the ATM may be a better option. Cash availability without the worries of someone else getting a hold of it and hacking into your bank account.

With the high rate of increase of identity theft throughout the world, we need to take any steps we can to try to protect ourselves from becoming victims of this faceless crime. When faced with the choice of a traditional ATM card and a debit card I urge you to truly consider what is best for your situation. Convenience may have its setbacks.

Copy DVD To DVD

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

A DVD is normally protected by a code called the CSS encryption. However, the code has been cracked and can be circumvented by numerous software applications. Most of these applications are based on the DeCss software that is illegal in many countries. Removing the protection and getting the movie stored in a hard drive is usually called ripping. Presently, there are many applications available on the market that can successfully rip and burn (copy) a DVD. Splitting and shrinking are the two other options.

Shrinking data is perhaps the most widely used alternative. There are many software programs that can compress data from the original DVD and fit it into a DVD recordable. They are also known as transcoders, encoders or compressor engines. This software can compress data in a way that makes it impossible to decipher whether the DVD copy is actually, a replica or the original. Movie compression is an arduous task for the average PC. With a standard system, compression can take about two hours.

There are other software programs capable of splitting a DVD movie into two or more discs. The disadvantage with these methods is that the user has to continuously change discs while viewing a movie. It is essential to know if the DVD player can play the copied DVD, and whether the DVD is recorded on DVD-R (W) or DVD+R (W) media. A normal home user can create DVD back up in this manner. However, for the advanced user, it is better to research information on the subject and by the best software available.

Isn’t There But One God?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I heard a pastor say, regarding people of the Muslim faith, “Too bad they are praying to the wrong God!” This was during a Sunday morning sermon. I flinched. Doesn’t the Bible say that there is only one God? I believe it does. I found at least six scripture references:

Mal 2:10 Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Mar 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

1Cr 8:6 But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him.

Eph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.

1Ti 2:5 For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Jam 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

I recall Osama Bin Laden asking, during one of his taped messages, “Where was your God . . .?” (during the September 11 attacks in 2001). I also recall that only about 10% of the number of people that are usually in the twin towers died that day. Did “our God” not take care of the other 90%? Did “their God” not help them in their mission? It seems to me that “one God” dealt with both factions the best He could and still keep His promises.

Does it matter that some call God “Jehovah”? Should it matter if some label their Lord by the name “Buddha”, or “Mohammed”, or “Jesus”? Should it matter if they refer to the Bible or to the Koran? Is not a rose by any other name still a rose? Are we not all brothers and sisters, regardless of religion, or politics, or color of our skin, or geography? I remember a scene in the movie, “Oh, God!”, in which George Burns, as God, answers a question from religious leaders about Jesus, Mohammed, and Buddha. He stated, as best I recall, “They were all my sons.” Of course, that was just a movie, wasn’t it?

I, and my wife, Carolyn Richards, attempt to get the message across during our Christian concerts that “Prayer Works!” Prayer works for everyone, regardless of religion, or politics, or skin color, or sex, or any other physical or emotional difference. It seems to be a law of the universe as surely as the Law of Gravity is. There can be only one “god”, one “force”, one “cosmic consciousness”, or one “higher power” that makes prayer work, regardless what labels we put on it! Perhaps we would all get along better if everyone realized this. The differences here on earth are ours, not God’s.

How to Learn a Skill with the Help of Audio Titles

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Journey Into Space: The Red Planet – Episode 03 by Charles Chilton is for certain an absorbing read, but today’s busy lifestyles can make finding time hard to do. Lengthy journeys to the office and mundane chores might consume enormous chunks of leisure time without you realizing it. Earning a living, caring for children or housework can all cut back the time available to persue your interests. If you enjoy reading and find it challenging to fit it in, commuting might be an opportunity for catching up. Using user friendly downloads, it’s easy to relish Horrid Henry Meets the Queen by Francesca Simon by Download Audio Book Online, or audiobooks brought to life by Stephen King when you are busy doing other things.

Multitasking has become an essential these days. Audiobooks such as Angels and Demons by Dan Brown by Download Audio Book Online take advantage of the wasted moments everyday, it may be waiting in a physician’s office or possibly driving the kids to soccer practise. Numerous audiobooks can be downloaded right now in mp3 format including Murder Unprompted by Simon Brett, and if you’ve got an iPod or another mp3 player you have the chance to hear a best seller or a great novel, for instance audible books by George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dezois and Daniel Abraham without carting a heavy book around.

Audible books extend various benefits such as the opportunity to rent or purchase many titles and listen to them at your own pace. Interested in studying Greek? Try audiobooks! It’s easy to review modern business practises, or you can enjoy studying the most radical thoughts about religious belief or spirituality.

Audiobooks are available in a myriad of titles and genres. Whether you like natural history, nuts about biographies or if your interests lie in self-help, most can be downloaded straightaway. Choices are wide open; you can take a subscription to a rental program or buy what interests you.

Ardent readers will invariably find a place to read, even so the most convenient way might be the myriad of audio titles now available. A narrator can deepen the enjoyment of the majority of books. Reading a novel is not the same as enjoying audio books told by Andrew Segal, including niceties presented during a rendidtion. Your reading experience will be increased by listening to audio books such as Dying to Cross by Jorge Ramos and often will mean a great deal more than the written words. So the next time whenever you think about buying the hard copy of a book that could easily collect dust on a shelf, do not forget about audio books as another alternative.

We’re Lucky to Have Water

Monday, March 16th, 2009

What would we do without water? It doesn’t bear even thinking about. I’m not talking about water in general, water used to dilute fruit juice or squash, nor the water found in vegetables and fruits. I mean the good pure stuff, the big clear bottles that most of us don’t glug down enough of. If you’re really honest with yourself, how much of this do you drink a day. I often take a small bottle- a bag friendly size- out with me of a day, and am surprised to find it still half full (or empty depending on how you look at life) by the end of the day. I drink more coffee and tea than water, which admittedly has water in it, but is also very dehydrating- not enough water plus dehydrating, chemical-laden beverages, equals not a good idea. We’re forgetting how much of a luxury water actually is. A third of the world’s population live in water-stressed countries, and there is moreover speculation that by 2025, this will have reached two thirds. Now that’s a scary statistic! So those of us who are lucky enough to have water aplenty, with safe drinkable water spilling out of our taps, should drink up

Power of Vision and Imagination

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Philosophically, the mind is the human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination.

The mind has two compartments:

the conscious mind and,
the subconscious mind

The conscious mind is the area of your mind that you are most familiar with. It includes images, thoughts, impressions, sounds etc. the subconscious mind contains all of your memories, beliefs, fears, defenses, and biases. All impressions in their entirety from the moment of birth are stored in this part of the mind. This collective accumulation of perceptions, programming, and conditioning directly influences who you are and what you become.

The subconscious mind rules our lives. Imagination is the language of the subconscious. The mind of a man does not differentiate between reality and imagination. Subconscious thinking must be aligned with conscious desires in order to reach your goal.

There is a function the mind plays in the journey towards success in life. To undervalue the place of the mind is to switch off the source of inspiration through which ideas are generated. The mind is the workshop for creativity. If it power is properly utilized, it has the ability to browse through the subconscious and bring dormant potentials to your knowledge and activate the conscious on what to do. God acknowledging the power of the mind affirmed at Babel that nothing shall be impossible unto man which he has imagined to do.

According to Napoleon Hill, whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve, hence no dream or vision can be conceived or generated without the platform of the mind. The mind as the power house of the body releases internal energy which has a compelling force to see to the actualization of your vision. The law of success says what you see is what you get. The quality of your life cannot be better than the quality of your thoughts. A man is therefore a product of how he thinks, for as he thinketh in his heart (mind) so is he. If you think success so you are, he can who thinks he can, he cant who thinks he cant. If you think failure, poverty, defeat so you are.

The journey from mediocrity to stardom begins with a change of mindset. You cannot travel without if you had not traveled within. The prodigal son remained in penury and hunger until he exercised the power of his mind. In biblical account it was recorded that “he came to himself”. This implies that before now he was not himself, his human reasoning and faculty of imagination had been suppressed by his circumstances, but when he looked inwards, he engaged the mind in a discussion that brought about a change in the bearing of his life. There can be no change of reproach until there is a change of approach. Spend time in dreaming and exploring the power of the mind until your visions become true.

Today’s dreams are the realities of tomorrow. You can sharpen your vision by exploring the power of the mind to renew and make your dream clearer. Whatever God has placed in your mind, it is because you can achieve it; get your mind renewed to be able to accommodate the big picture. Moses sent twelve spies to search the Promised Land ahead of the people of God. Ten of them came back with evil report; they did not have the capacity to comprehend and interprete what God said with what they saw. They exaggerated the inhabitants of the land and made caricature of God’s word in their minds, so they could not enter in because of unbelief. There is need for us to position our minds aright so that the vision of tomorrow will not be aborted at the altar of unbelief. Success is from the inside out; from within are the issues of life. YOUR MIND IS YOUR GREATEST ASSET.

Discover The Upside of Anger

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Most of us are prone to anger! As we grow older, a certain degree of control keeps us in check, but the pot is on simmer and the lid is loosely fixed. An unexpected jolt, or a sudden increase in heat will nearly always result in a boiling cauldron.

Recently we had a couple come to us for help. They had been married for only three weeks. With arms folded, one sat at one end of the couch and the other at the other end. They were very angry; ready to end the marriage there and then!

Child and spouse abuse is rarely a premeditated thing; in most cases it follows a situation where anger pushes aside common sense and lashes out at the first thing it sees. Tragically, that ‘first thing’ is often a loved one.

In order to help this couple we had to find out what caused them to be so angry with each other. Both of them displayed the very thing that we believe is the root cause of not all, but a lot of anger. Fear!

Fear is a close relative of anger

Perhaps that is a foreign concept to you. Neither the husband nor wife could see the root cause of their anger until we were able to point it out to them. Anger seems to do that to you. It blinds you from the truth! It causes you to look for someone else to blame. I always say once you are able to see and own the real cause of your problem you are over half way to solving it.

Sometimes fears hide themselves and you have to look closer. For example a man likes to succeed, right? Push his buttons and see if he doesn’t react as a result of a fear of failure.

A woman likes to be affirmed, right? Push her buttons and see if she isn’t deep down afraid of rejection. Come on, we all like to be accepted whether it is through what we do or how we look.

In the husband’s case he had been married twice before and both times he had lost a lot of money. Fear of it happening again was the root cause of his outbursts of anger.

Of course, those sudden flare-ups of temper, while destructive enough, are not the most vicious forms of anger. Much more deadly is the “controlled burn”, the seething crater of hatred and spite contained within the heart and fed daily with fresh accusations, either real or imagined. Given the right set of circumstances, one might lash out and in the process bring hurt where none was intended.

In the Bible the apostle Paul spoke not of the possibility of anger, but of what to do in its presence. “Go ahead and be angry”, he said in Ephesians 4:26. “But don’t use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don’t stay angry, and don’t go to bed angry.” (The Message)

If we are very hurt and very angry, our anger can overcome us – like the couple that came for help. What do we do then? Although there is much written on anger management I feel the most important of all is to forgive the person who has hurt you and deal with the cause of your anger.

Why is it important to forgive when you have been wronged?

Forgiveness releases you

In the Bible Jesus said: “Forgive and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37). The literal translation of this Bible verse is ‘release and you will be released’.

If you really forgive someone, you no longer blame that person, even though they may be blameworthy. If you do not blame a person, you cannot resent them. If you do not resent them you cannot hold any bitterness in your heart. If you do not hold bitterness then you do not get all emotionally tied up with anger and hate towards that person.

Forgiveness is a Choice

In Biblical terms, forgiveness is the loving, voluntary cancellation of a debt. It is like when someone ‘owes’ you, but you choose to cancel the debt. (Matthew 18:24-43)

It does not matter how long ago the hurtful event occurred, how wrong they are or how many times we are hurt. The Bible says we must forgive them so God can bless and forgive us. “If you forgive others their sins, your Father in heaven will also forgive you your sins.”

Do not use the excuse that you are waiting until you feel like forgiving or until they ask for forgiveness – it will probably never happen. It only hurts you if you continue to let your emotions rule your life. Forgiveness is a choice!

Deal with the root cause of anger

As mentioned earlier we all have expectations in life, whether it be to succeed or be accepted. When these are blocked we can become frustrated and angry. Several things can trigger anger, but they may not necessarily be the real cause of your outbursts. A good doctor or counselor will be able to help you understand what is the root cause of your anger.

As mentioned, there is a definite link between fear and anger. What can I do about it once my fears are recognized?

The moment I began a personal relationship with God and became his child I was allowed to enjoy all the privileges a child would receive. I had his love. God has promised that his love will drive fear away. “Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives fear out.” (1 John 4:18)

By allowing God to fill you with his love you too can conquer your fears. Whether it is a fear of failure or fear of rejection you can be secure in his love knowing that he will help you to succeed and meet your deep inner needs if you allow him.
